Jul 26, 2016

We get so busy-we hardly have any down time in today's family. And when we do, we may be so exhausted that we just check out. How to get clear on getting our family on track, and I don't mean how to get everyone to soccer practice, gets lost.

Gift Giving Guide from a Play Therapist

Dec 09, 2015

The holidays are in full swing and many of us are on the hunt for the perfect gifts for our loved ones, which may include the children in our lives.  Kids are so often in the present moment, we don’t want to give them something they play with for five minutes and then we watch it become forgotten and dusty. We also want kids to feel happy and loved, that’s the whole motive behind giving gifts at the holidays, at least it used to be. I’d like to introduce some ideas, as well as some gifts, that are great for your child.

Am I Screwing Up My Kids?

Sep 22, 2015

One of our blog readers recently requested a post on “How do I know I’m not screwing up my kids?”

Sexual Abuse-Healing is Possible!

Jun 02, 2015

According to the Crimes Against Children Research Center, 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse.  3 out of 4 adolescents report that those who have sexually assaulted them were someone they knew well.   I wanted to start with those statistics because this is a wake-up call. It happens.

The Debate and Media Frenzy of the Free Range Parenting Case

Apr 20, 2015

My guess is most parents do not have their finger on the pulse of their state’s laws on child neglect and abuse. I even have to look up specifics as a clinical social worker. Let’s review these now so we have our ducks in a row. In Virginia, my home state, there is no set age, only recommended guidelines. There are also notes on various Child Protective Services (CPS) websites that state “Parents should use good judgement.”
